McNutty in the house!
Quick update on Franklin McNutty, the escape artist hamster. I came home early from work on Thursday and opened the door to the room he was confined in and there he was!! He was just kind of walking around like "welcome to my room". I scooped him up and got him back in his cage where he drank a ton of water, stuffed his little cheeks and promptly passed the F out. Poor little guy! He's lost weight (probably all the running around hiding from me) but otherwise seemed to be really healthy. After I got him secured, I ran around like a crazy person telling the dog that her buddy was found. The dog, having no idea what was going on got really excited because I was excited and jumped around the house with me. It was a good day!

Mr. Franklin McNutty
Our hamster is missing and I'm seriously stressed about it. It's been 4 days and I don't know how long he can survive out in the wild of the bedroom that I use as an extension of my closet. It's gotten a little crazy. I have his food out, his water bottle accessible, his ball open and waiting and an Easter basket with fake grass for him in case he wants to snuggle up for a little nap. I have the room cordoned off and I know he's still in there because he's been eating the food I leave out. I think the cats suspect that something is up too. They aren't allowed in that room because of Franklin but lately they have just been sitting by the door and I'm afraid they are going to blow my cover. See, I haven't told my husband that Franklin is missing yet. I was hoping to just find him and then tell it to him after the fact as a funny story. What will not be funny is if he finds out and then proceeds to tear apart the bedroom piece by piece! That is exactly what will happen if he finds out too so I'm trying to keep it on the DL for now and tempt him out with carrots and treats. Keep your fingers crossed for a swift recovery of Mr. Franklin McNutty!

Truth
I realize that I have said over and over taht I am going to post more. Honestly that is my intention, but lately I have been having some serious struggles with depression. It comes and goes and right now it's like a huge weight on my chest, it's hard to breathe and I feel very small right now. I know this won't last forever and I know that it will get better. I know all this but I'm still just having a rough time. Please bare with me, it'll get better, I just know it will.

Cardinals and Conclaves and Smoke, Oh my!
I think of all these great things to write about and then when it comes time to actually put words down they all run away. I suppose I could go with the news of the day. New pope! As a non-practicing Catholic, I still found myself caught up in all the pomp and circumstance that surrounds the selection. I had just gotten online today when I saw the CNN breaking news that there was white smoke at the Vatican, at that same moment, all the church bells in town began ringing. It seemed like a very important moment so I turned on the TV and plopped down to see who would be taking the place as the new Holy See. (I still have no idea exactly what that means.)
Even though I haven't been to church in an embarrassing amount of time, I was still moved by the sight of all the people gathered in the square to meet their new spiritual leader. People were so emotional and joyous it reminded me of all the good things that religion could be and should be no matter what your faith. I consider myself to have spirtual faith, but I think there is good to come from every religion and I try to take the good parts and apply them to my life.
I personally was rooting for the Canadian, Cardinal Marc Ouellet. Mostly because he is from Quebec which is 22 miles from where I live and I could practically envision the Popemobile driving down the highway. I know that wouldn't happen but the thought that it maybe could, is just too awesome to ignore. I don't know much about Pope Frances and I'm sure we will all be flooded with information over the next few days and weeks but the real test will come as he gets settled at the Vatican and begins his tenure (reign, appointment, not sure what to use). The only thing that I want from our new pope is that he moves towards more inclusion in the church and to get away from all the controversy that it has had to endure in recent times. Oh and if he could drive the popemobile in my neighborhood, that would be cool too.

Birthday!
Yikes, I am just a terrible blogger! I can't believe I haven't gotten my writing on in so long. I blame it on fantasy hockey and the upcoming fantasy baseball draft. My bad. There are no good excuses, unless it was that I was abducted by aliens and became their queen. That's a good excuse. That didn't happen though, mostly I was lazy and busy.
Since I have last updated this here blog, I had a birthday! Yay!! I love my birthday! Some people get all freaked out by turning another year older but honestly it just makes me happy. Happy and grateful. I celebrate getting another year to spend with family and friends and my furry babies. There are so many that don't get the chance. In fact, I was so sickly as a young child that my mom was told that there was a good chance that I wouldn't make it to my 16th birthday. Yet here I am, 20 years past that estimate and while I still have some health challenges, I can say that the doctor was very wrong and I intend to be around for a whole lot longer. I should take better care of myself especially with my diet, and if anyone can tell me how to give up my paralyzing cheese addiction, I'm all ears. Cheese, you evil mistress! I'll work on it.
That's all I have for right now, but I promise, no more long unexplained absences, at least not that I can see anyway.

I meme you meme we all meme...
Okay so I'm a little late in doing this, but I had things going on! That's a lame excuse. Mostly I was lazy, but hey, better late than never, am I right? So without further ado, my year in review, shamlessly stolen from Aunt Becky at mommywantsvodka.com:

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
In the end, everything will be alright. If it's not alright, it's not the end. Okay that isn't a song lyric, but I really like it and I'm keeping it.
However, it is the end of this meme!

December 14th
I don't know what to say about the shooting at the elementary school in Connecticut. These tragedies happen way to often but this one, right before Christmas, this one, at an elementary school, this one that took the lives of so many innocent young children. This one hurts the worst.
I'm also angry, I'm angry at the coward that did this and then took his own life so that he won't ever have to see the unimaginable grief in the faces of family members and loved ones that lost those dear to them. He won't have to answer for his actions, won't give an explanation, no, he chose a coward's way out which I suppose is fitting, because what kind of human being could do something so disgustingly horrible, only the worst kind of sick, weak coward. That is all I will ever say about that lowlife.
The brave ones are the teachers and other school employees. My mother, cousin, aunt and grandmother have all been or are teachers and I know that the teachers at the school did everything in their power to protect those children. They are truly brave and they deserve our love and support.
I cannot imagine how the families affected by this are going to cope not only over the next few weeks, but every year when December 14th comes closer on the calendar.

And the streak continues!
Once again I have yelled at poor little innocent animals, but I think one of them was evil this time. I should explain...
So Monday night I was driving home, taking a different way then usual so that I could go slower since it was rain/snowing and driving in that crap is my own personal nightmare, when I see two deer on the side of the road. One is busy munching away on grass or hay or whatever they eat but the other one, oh the other one, she is eyeing my car so I yell at her "You stupid, STUPID deer!!!! Don't even THINK about it" Her response? She cocked her ear at me as if to say "You wanna dance, bring it on, I'll wreck your shit" and she eyeballed me as I crept by at about 3 miles an hour and driving in the middle of the road. I did not want to dance, so I continued on my way, cursing stupid deer under my breath for the next 10 miles or so.

Time to brush off those test taking skills
I have finally come to the end of the course I've been taking for the past 6 months or so and now it's time for the big final exam which is 80% of my grade! AH! I've had to take section quizzes throughout and not to toot my own horn, but I've been pretty much kicking ass so far. For the quizzes, I was able to print out the test and do it over a period of a few days or longer if needed. The final test is proctored by a manager at my job and I only have 6 hours to take it. Needless to say, I'm freaking out a little. I haven't taken a real test since college and that was more years ago then I care to remember. I used to be a pretty good test taker, but the anxiety is high with this one. There is so much material and I worry about second guessing myself into wrong answers. If anyone has any tried and true test taking tips, I'm all ears!
I'm so ready to be done this course!

Sleepy
So I had planned to write this glorious post all about me being adopted and all kinds of interesting things. However, I'm so tired I just want to curl up under the pretty fake Christmas tree and take a nap. So I guess it's going to have to wait for another day. I am oh so happy I have tomorrow off!

30 years...
There is no way that it has been 30 years since Thriller came out! How is that possible?? Time is going by much to fast, I suspect a wormhole is to blame.

Winter has arrived and so have my shopping issues
I suppose now that we have a fine blanket of snow covering the ground that doesn't disappear with the morning sun I should just go ahead and admit that winter has inevitably come. At least it has up here in the arctic tundra of upstate (not Albany but waaaay upstate) New York. I have my first cold of the winter season and I've been taking Emergen-C to try and knock that bitch out before the holidays.
With the admission that winter is here, I should really get my butt in gear and get to the Christmas shopping. I love giving gifts on Christmas, my bank account doesn't love it as much. I know it's not the whole point of the season, but seeing the joy on someones face when I nail it and get the perfect gift makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I'm a shopping slacker though. Every year I have grand intentions of going out early and having everything done and every year, without fail, I find myself scrambling in the last week to finish shopping and start wrapping. This year I'm telling myself that I'm going to win the giant lottery and so I have to wait for that. Those hopes will be dashed tonight so then I'll think of another excuse. Don't get me wrong, I have some stuff squirreled away in the closet but I've barely made a dent so far. I was talking with a friend at work who told me that she was already done and wrapped, WRAPPED! She started back in July. She puts me to shame!
My mom is the worst to shop for. You could ask her a million times what she wants and not get an answer. She doesn't want to put us out. When my brother and I were younger, she told us that she wanted Youth Dew powder from Estee Lauder so ever since then, it's our go to. I shudder to think of how many boxes of Youth Dew she has piled up in her house. My brother is an uber-geek so he wouldn't be to hard to shop for, if he didn't buy everything he wanted for himself before Christmas! Bill, basically my step-dad but he's not married to my mom, never wants anything and is super hard to buy for as well. One year I bought him ice fishing tip ups (poles basically), ice fishing poles, for God's sake! These people are taunting me but I will get them something awesome, as God as my witness, I shall not be denied! Ok, rant over, as you were people. I did mention that I love this gift giving crap, right?

My apologies... :)
Yikes, so I should probably not blog and drink anymore! So sorry about that, all. This morning wasn't as painful as I thought but my head wasn't a happy camper. It's a good thing I work in the afternoon though. So, yeah, that won't be happening again at least for a looooong time!!
A Study in Drunkeness
I have no idea how this will turn out but I figured I'd try something a little different. So yeah, I'm a little drunky right now. I have been obsessively playing my Facebook games, I'm so addicted it's not even funny!! What can I say, I love me some bejeweled! Ok that's a lie, it wasn't working, hence my blogging at this obscene hour. If I haven't mentioned it before, I'm a crazy night owl. Not by choice, I think it's the way I was built. I did just get done all my other silly games; like Slingo, Words with Friends (I'm sure I was awesome) and Candy Crush Solitaire and now Mr. Labatt is merrily kicking my ass. Don't expect this drunkenness to be a regular thing, as I state in the title, it's merely an experiment, and my husband, Stacy, thinks I'm being kind of a dumbass at the moment. I cannot disagree! Sometimes being a dumbass is exactly what is needed at the end of a day that really kicks your ass, and let me tell you, this day kicked my ass and this is, most assuredly, the end of it!!! GOODNIGHT! (I hope to God it's a good morning as well)

Long walks and random animal parts
The title for this post is more of something that my dog would put in her "likes" column. I'm not that weird! I love my dog very much and I love taking her for walks at night when I get done work. Just her and I in the peaceful quiet night. The thing I am not liking, is her uncanny ability to find random parts of animals during our walks. Keep in mind that I live in a small city, we have sidewalks and roads. I'm not in the middle of the country where various animal parts would be more understandable. Still gross, but understandable.
Last year it was a wing. Oh how she loved that wing, we'd walk by and she would stop and roll and roll on it no matter how much I tried to pull her away or how much I was gagging. I have no idea what happened to the rest of the poor bird that left his wing on the sidewalk but I'm sure it wasn't pretty. I like to pretend that he transformed into something awesome like a unicorn and had no use for stupid wings anymore.
Last week my sweet sweet pup found a tail. I think it was attached to a red squirrel at some point based on the size and color. Again, I'm thinking unicorn transformation, but I can't be sure. She was so enthralled with the tail. She pawed at it, sniffed it and then tried to pick it up in her mouth. This is when my super human strength kicked in and I was able to pull her away. Ew no, no putting tails attached or unattached into her mouth. it is not happening on my watch. She's an extremely strong dog and about 75 to 80 pounds so pulling her anywhere is no small feat.
We made it home and I promptly forgot about it until a few hours later when I mentioned it to my husband. His response: "You couldn't have told me about this BEFORE I let her lick my face". Oops!

Fall in upstate NY
It's taken me a few days to recover from that close win the Giants (football Giants not baseball Giants) had on Sunday. I swear these close games will be the death of me! That RG3 is a beast!
So Fall is in full swing for the next month or so then we plunge right into winter for the next 5 or so months. It may seem as though I'm exaggerating, but I remember many a Halloween of trick or treating in a snow suit and many a soccer game being played after the field was shoveled off. I also remember a few stray snowstorms in mid-April. Winter comes hard in upstate New York, so I'll enjoy Fall while it's here.
There are two things about Fall that I am not a fan of. The first is that my nose runs like it's off switch is broken. I have a buttload (technical term) of allergies. My allergist once joked about putting me in a bubble and I cried. Not cool Dr. G, not cool. Fall and Spring are the times when my allergies go into super mode and the sneezing, coughing and non-stop nose are a constant. I feel bad for people that have to listen to my hacking and wheezing. I'm used to it so I'm unfazed mostly except the nose part. Fortunately Spring and Fall are also the shortest seasons here so I have that going for me.
The second thing about Fall, is that the deer are in rut. Basically, there are a bunch of horny deer all running around like maniacs. Anybody that knows me knows that this is a bad situation for me. I've never hit a deer, unlike my friend J who hit two (two!) in a week, but the thought that I could takes my paranoid driving to a whole other level. Yep, I'm that slow a-hole that will not go above the speed limit under the most perfect conditions but when you throw horny animals running around on roads into the mix, I'm practically Mr. Magoo or whoever drives really slow, I think he just drove badly because he was blind, but you get where I'm going with it.
Fall, I love you with your pretty colors, cooler weather, apple cider, pies, cute pumpkins and Halloween stuff, but at this point I'm sorta looking forward to Winter. Well, at least until that first foot of snow that I have to shovel out of!
*Programming note:
Yay! I'm super excited that there is a new PLL (Pretty Little Liars) on tonight! It already aired but I'm still at work, obviously being very productive so I have to wait until I get home to satisfy my teen murder mystery craving. The husband already has it all ready for me, he's a closet fan of the show too! Tonight shall be a great night!

Batman is not my friend
I hate bats. I hate them with a fiery passion reserved only for Roseanne Barr's voice and pilot light stoves. I was reminded of how much I hate them tonight when I walked out of the building at work and around the corner and saw one flying around all crazy and skittery. My, what I'm now calling "Animal Tourette's" kicked in and I yelled "WOAH FUCKER" while probably looking like a certified crazy person backing away from what surely looked like nothing.
This isn't the first time I have freaked out because of the flying rats. I once spotted a bat out of the corner of my eye while playing tennis and proceeded to freak out. I threw my racket straight into the air while running to the car and locking myself in. I would not come out until it was time to leave. I also have taken off in a dead sprint while talking with my friends outside without a word to them about what was going on. That freaked them out but surprisingly, they are still friends with me. I can't control myself when I see a bat. I lose all sense of rationality. I suppose I should explain how my phobia began.
It all started when I was sweet and innocent in the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of high school. I had to have my jaw broken and wired shut for an agonizingly long (not for my family I'm sure) 8 and a half weeks. I was at my grandma's house for family dinner and afterwards a bunch of my cousins and some aunts decided that we'd go for a walk around the village. My grandma lived in a small village right on the lake where everyone knows everyone. It's really a nice peaceful place, but on that night the peace was broken by my horrified, muffled screams. See while we were all walking, enjoying the summer night and having a grand ole time, I ended up at the back of the pack. I was probably distracted by something shiny as is wont to happen. All of a sudden, out of the blue, something comes flying out of the night and directly onto my face. Keep in mind, that my jaw was firmly wired shut and I was pretty much unable to make coherent sentences as it was. I tried to swat it away which only angered the bat and it proceeded to get entangled in my hair. Finally I got it dislodged and it flew away no worse for wear from the encounter. I ran frantically to the group ahead screaming as best as I could without opening my mouth, tears were flowing down my cheeks and my family all stopped and tried to figure out what was wrong with me this time. I have a history of weird accidents, remind me to tell the story of me running myself over with a 4 wheeler sometime. When I was finally able to write down on my handy dandy little notepad that I carried for communication, what had happened, they all started laughing hysterically. Thanks a lot fam! Ever since that fateful day, I cannot even look at a bat on the TV without cringing and closing my eyes. Just the though of the little flying petri dishes makes me shiver with disgust. I learn as much as I can about them, (know your enemy!) and will gladly tell anyone who will listen about how horrible they are. Bats have become my mortal enemy due to a warm summer night many years ago.
So no, Batman is not my friend. Besides, I've always preferred Supergirl. She's got a fantastic first name!

Some Things
Just a couple of things that I want to share....
- First, is it normal for an adult woman to scream at animals from the relative safety of her vehicle? This happened to me the other night while driving home from work. An innocent raccoon was hanging out on the side of the road just waddling around and I didn't see him until I was right next to him, loud singing may have been involved in the distraction. He scared me and I yelled at the top of my lungs, alone, in my car "SWEET JESUS RACKENHOON" and kept driving. I call them rackenhoons thanks to a little girl I used to nanny for that couldn't pronounce the word raccoon to save her life. She also had problems with yesterday, yessertoday.
-To my lovely neighbors downstairs. Congratulations on the lady love fest last night, way to go, really, but for the love of all that is good and holy, please, I beg of you, close your damn windows!! I don't think the whole neighborhood needed the play by play. I honestly thought there was a hurt cat outside at first.
-Finally I want to brag on myself for a quick minute. The toilet in our apartment was running something fierce, the sound of running water almost constant. So annoying but also apparently jacking up the water bill, who knew? So I decided to take matters into my own hands and repair it. After hours (like 10 minutes tops) of scouring the Internet for answers, I trucked off to Wally World to get some supplies. With what I hoped were the correct parts I proceeded to replace the faulty part in the toilet and stop the annoying leaky thing! I did it! I have mad plumbing skillz, yo. I feel a new career coming on, but without all the crack of course. It does however flush twice when you push the handle, but whatever, no more running water!

BEEF (ode to a best friend)
I figure it's about time to talk about a big part of my life, Gary or as I call him, Garrison. Gary isn't my husband, he isn't even a relative of mine, but you might as well say we are family. He's my best friend, my beef. I know most people have close friends but they don't have a Beef! There's no weirdness with my best friend being a guy, as people may expect, he's my Gary and I wouldn't function right if he wasn't my best friend. Some might even say that we share a brain, and, honestly, that might not be far from the truth!
Gary is the type of friend that won't judge me or be hard on me when I do something stupid, which happens a lot. He can make me laugh full belly laughs by being utterly ridiculous with me. Usually it's with something to do with Ewoks, unicorns or something totally inappropriate. In fact, ridiculousness is the way we roll.
Last fall Gary and I took a road trip to Philadelphia for our friend LB's wedding. We were there for 4 days and you know how spending time with someone can usually drive you insane. Wait, is that just me? Anyway, that never happens with Gary, we spent the time drunk, shopping and laughing. There was no drunk shopping though, that would be a terrible idea and end up with one of us buying a falcon or bedazzled car. Ok, ok the car would totally be something I would buy. I'm always threatening to bedazzle random things and Gary has stopped me.
When my mom had to have surgery for cancer, Gary offered to come to the hospital and sit with me even though the surgery was at the ass crack of dawn and made sure I let him know how she was doing as soon as I found out.
Gary is the kind of friend that I can call any time day or night and say that I need him to drive to my house and take me to Guatemala and his only question would be who is picking up the coffee and what are we going to pig out on. It's truly great to have a friend that will always be there for you and would give you a kidney if you needed it. I try and be just as good of a friend to him and hopefully I don't do to bad of a job!
We all need a Gary in our lives and I'm lucky that he's mine!

Football Time!!
I can't believe I haven't mentioned how excited I am that football is in full swing! I am a football junkie, I live for it! The team I bleed blue and red for is the New York Football Giants. Granted, I live in New York, but this is not the reason for my undying love and devotion to the team.
Before I had geographical awareness, as a little wee one, I would spend most weekends with my grandparents. The weekends were the best; cousins, aunts and uncles would all come over and we'd watch sports, eat an amazing grandma cooked meal and run around like little Tasmanian devils. My love of football, baseball, basketball and even boxing was born of these weekends. I of course had to root for the same teams as the family, otherwise I might have been disowned. The one exception to this is baseball. Let's just say, the Yankees are not my team of choice.
Thus my love of the NY Giants was born and for some reason football is the sport I love the most. I think it has something to do with the fact that they only have 16 games in which to prove their mettle. Unlike the 873 games it seems that baseball and basketball have per season. Also I love the physicality of the game, these guys really give blood, sweat and tears on the field.
I proudly manage not one but two fantasy football teams and do pretty well if I do say so myself. I study stats and players and matchups with a fierce determination as if I were the coach leading the team onto the field. My Sundays are spent watching as much football as possible with more then a little yelling at the TV as if I could will my team to just get that extra yard or even inch to move the chains.
Obsessive? A tad, but it's what I love and I'll never give it up. I'm just like my grandma yelling at players to do better and getting so mad when they don't listen and I can't imagine not doing it. Frankly, being just like my grandma doesn't sound like a bad thing to me. She was a pretty amazing lady.
